1 July 2011 - Caroline Pidcock
Marion Mahony Griffin 2011 prize
At the NSW Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects
awards night on Friday 1 July 2011, Caroline was awarded the Marion
Mahony Griffin 2011 Prize.
In 1998 the NSW Chapter of the Institute of Architects
introduced the Marion Mahony Griffin Prize to acknowledge a woman
architect for a distinctive body of architectural work. This 'body
of work' could be in the area of architectural education,
journalism, research, professional practice and theory as well as
for built architectural work.
The Prize is intended to instill a philosophy of equal
opportunity into the current Award system by considering the role
of women architects in the profession. There have been many women
who have not been recognised for their significant contribution to
the profession because of the structure of the existing award
system which on the whole only recognises architectural work for
individual buildings. This prize endeavors to redress this
situation. The adoption of the name of Marion Mahony Griffin
recognises her invaluable contribution to the combined effort of
Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony to the architecture of
Australia.
